Flat Bars - Steel Flats

BS EN 10025-2 : 2004 - S275JR

Steel flat bars are essential rectangular sections known for their smooth, flat surfaces and versatility. Often called Steel Flats, Flat Stock, or Rectangular Bars in the trade, these sections are engineered for dimensional accuracy and durability across the UK’s construction and engineering sectors. As a leading UK stockholder, Barrett Steel supplies an extensive range of structural steel to both large-scale contractors and the DIY market.

Our flat bars feature a clean rectangular cross-section with consistent thickness throughout, providing the structural integrity needed for standard builds and bespoke projects alike. The flat profile of these sections makes them easy to work with.

They can be punched, drilled, or cut into custom shapes for specialised jobs. Whether you are stiffening a structural beam or fabricating industrial components, our steel flats offer a reliable, precision-finished solution.

Primary Applications

  • Construction & Infrastructure: Essential for bracing, secondary supports, and load-bearing elements in bridges and platforms.
  • Industrial Fabrication: Used for heavy-duty racking, storage structures, and machinery components.
  • Agricultural: Ideal for wear strips, support brackets, and farm machinery framework.
  • General Steelwork: The standard choice for high-quality gates, fencing, stringers, tie rods, and brackets

General Facts
'General Steels' is our division for core structural profiles used in framing and fabrication. This includes: Universal Beams, Columns, Channels, Angles and Hollow Sections.
Their rectangular profile and flat surfaces offer exceptional versatility for bracing and general steelwork.
We supply them in S275JR grade to ensure consistent strength and durability.
The standard formula for mild steel is:

Width (mm) \times Thickness (mm) \times 0.00785 = Weight\ per\ metre\ (kg/m)

For example, a 50mm x 6mm flat bar weighs approximately 2.36kg per metre.
Yes. Flat bars are frequently used in infrastructure for reinforcement, secondary load-bearing members in bridges, and walkway platforms. Our flat bars are 100% UKCA and CE compliant, meeting all necessary safety standards for public works.
