Barrett Steel were proud to welcome Sir Nic Dakin, Member of Parliament and active supporter of the UK steel industry, to our Barrett Steel Processing Centre in Scunthorpe this week.
Sir Nic was guided around the state-of-the-art facility by Chief Operating Officer Guy Barrett, Group Operations Director Joe Newman, and Richard Gawler—Managing Director of both our Distribution and Processing Centres. Richard has recently been promoted to GMB member in recognition of his excellent leadership across these key areas of the business.
Located just miles from our extensive Barrett Steel Distribution Centre at Groveport, the Scunthorpe Processing Centre is a vital part of our UK-wide steel network. The facility houses a wide range of on-site processing services including shot blasting and painting, cutting, and drilling—supported by our latest investment, the HGG RPC 1200 Plasma Coping Robot. This advanced machine further enhances our precision profiling capabilities, allowing us to support complex fabrication requirements at scale and speed.
Sir Nic’s visit comes at a pivotal time for the UK steel industry, particularly in regions like Scunthorpe which have long been a cornerstone of British steelmaking. As former Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Steel and Metal Related Industries, Sir Nic has long championed the sector and continues to support local businesses through dialogue and engagement.
“In a turbulent time for the UK Steel Industry, it was great for Sir Nic Dakin to take time to visit our facility and see our investment plans for Scunthorpe,” said COO Guy Barrett. “It was great to get his support and to share our ambitions for the future of steel in Scunthorpe.”
The visit offered a valuable opportunity to showcase Barrett Steel’s ongoing investment in the region, our commitment to innovation, and our belief in a resilient, sustainable future for UK steel. With continued support from leaders like Sir Nic Dakin, we’re confident the sector can overcome the challenges ahead and continue to thrive.
