We were proud to welcome Sky News to our Dudley Laser Processing Centre last week, where our Chief Commercial Officer, Tom Barrett, sat down with Paul Kelso to discuss the pressing challenges currently facing the UK steel industry.
As the UK’s largest independent steel stockholder and processor, with 28 sites nationwide and over 2,000 tonnes of steel supplied daily, we understand the realities of operating in an increasingly volatile and globally influenced market.
During the interview, Tom addressed the impact of US steel tariffs and the knock-on effects these can have on global trade. While the UK may not be a direct target, the risk of retaliatory tariffs from countries affected by US measures could have serious consequences for British steel businesses.
“It’s not the cost of exports that concerns us,” Tom explained, “but the potential for a global trade war where the UK becomes collateral. In such a scenario, we believe the UK Government should be prepared to take protective action, including imposing its own tariffs if necessary.”
With a heritage dating back to 1866, Barrett Steel has stood the test of time as a sixth-generation family business, supporting the UK's construction and manufacturing sectors for over 150 years. Today, we continue to advocate for fair and balanced trade policies that protect UK manufacturers and distributors alike.
We are proud to be a trusted voice in the industry and to share our perspective on national platforms like Sky News, helping to raise awareness of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for British steel.
