Barrett Steel’s £30,000 Commitment to Cancer Research UK

07 November 2024

A Morning with the Leeds Pathology Team

Our Barrett Steel Limited team across the UK has worked tirelessly this year, coming together with customers and suppliers to raise nearly £30,000 for Cancer Research UK (CRUK). This dedication to CRUK speaks volumes about our commitment to contributing to cancer research and, ultimately, helping shape a future with more effective diagnosis and treatment options.

As a powerful culmination of our fundraising efforts, we had the unique opportunity to spend a morning with the talented Pathology team in the research labs at the Leeds Cancer Research Centre. Being there offered a rare, behind-the-scenes look into the pivotal work that’s transforming cancer treatment. We learned firsthand about the rigorous processes involved in screening, treatment, and emerging research projects, like how gut biomes may play a role in determining diagnoses and treatment paths for bowel cancer.

The Leeds Cancer Research Centre and Cancer Grand Challenges

Our visit aligns with the ambitious goals of the Leeds Cancer Research Centre, which was recently established as a hub for groundbreaking cancer research. The centre collaborates with the Cancer Grand Challenges initiative, a global effort that empowers researchers to tackle some of the biggest challenges in cancer. These challenges bring together scientists worldwide, working tirelessly to advance our understanding of cancer biology and improve treatment options. By supporting CRUK, Barrett Steel is proud to play a small but meaningful role in supporting these groundbreaking projects that could redefine cancer care.

Insights and Reflections from the Visit

Reflecting on the experience, Lindsay Clarke from HR shared, “The whole team was engaging and inspiring, taking time out to show what they do and how they do it, all with a great passion and drive to work together to find breakthroughs and solutions to fight cancer.” It’s clear that everyone involved in this work is united by a shared commitment to making a difference in cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Similarly, Chloe Milner from HR said, “I’ve really enjoyed working with our sites to raise the amount of money we have. It was an honour to be invited behind the scenes to see the importance of the money raised and where it goes. The team was inspiring, with a passion to make a difference, and it was insightful seeing the processes to get to the end results.” Her reflections remind us of the direct impact our contributions have on advancing cancer research.

A United Front Against Cancer

At Barrett Steel, we know that cancer has affected nearly everyone, directly or indirectly. While we can’t erase the grief and loss cancer has brought into our lives, days like today inspire us to keep pushing forward. Being part of the solution, even in a small way, strengthens our resolve to support life-changing research that can benefit countless individuals now and in the future.

Moving Forward Together

As we continue our journey, Barrett Steel remains committed to supporting Cancer Research UK, knowing that our fundraising efforts go toward critical research that might one day lead to a cure. The determination of the Leeds research teams and CRUK fills us with hope, and we’re immensely grateful to all our staff, customers, and suppliers who have supported this cause alongside us.
