FOCUS ON FERRITIC GRADES

Ferritic stainless steels generally have better engineering properties than austenitic grades, but can have reduced corrosion resistance, because of the lower chromium content. They are also usually less expensive. They contain between 10.5% and 27% chromium and very little nickel, if any.

Barrett Stainless stock Grades
  • 1:4003 – medium corrosion resistance/Low cost/painted or HDG replacement
  • 1:4509 (441) – Good corrosion resistant/Good asthetics/Medium cost/ Possible 304 replacement
  • 1:4521 (444) – Good corrosion resistant/ good aesthetics/ medium cost/ Possible 316 replacement
1:4003
  • Is a low cost 12% chromium stainless steel with the corrosion resistance superior to that of carbon steel due to its higher chromium content.
  • As with other ferritic grades 1:4003 has an excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
  • This grade can be used in most indoor applications requiring stainless steel but also in outdoor applications where aesthetics is not a major requirement.
  • Alternatively where aesthetics are of importance applying a protective coatings, like a paint systems is a common solution.
1:4509
  • Is a typically 18% chromium based stainless steel with corrosion resistance better than 1:4003.
  • Having no nickel but with the addition of niobium and titanium it isn’t subject to the wild price fluctuations associated with austenitic grades.
  • Excellent aesthetics.
  • Should be considered as a replacement for the Austenitic grade 304.
  • Can be supplied in sheet plate and coil as well as box, rectangular and round tube.
  • Also available in all polished finishes.
1:4521
  • Is a typically 18% chromium based stainless steel with corrosion resistance as good as 1:4509 and better than 1:4003.
  • Having no nickel but with the addition of niobium and titanium it isn’t subject to the wild price fluctuations associated with austenitic grades.
  • Excellennt aesthetics.
  • Should be considered as a replacement for the Austenitic grade 304

In these grades Barrett Stainless stock sheet, plate, coil, tube, square and rectangular sections but in addition as a market leader we can provide a complete range of processing including laser cutting, finished parts, sub assemblies or polished finishes. We also supply the metal from our extensive stock in standard sheet sizes and tube lengths.
